The dystopian trilogy written by Veronica Roth has been a huge hit with young adult readers thanks to its addictive storyline. As civil war rages, Tris battles with keeping her friends and family safe, a new romance and the danger of her true nature as a Divergent. She has to figure out who her friends really are, complete the extreme tests of endurance, whilst at the same time keeping her potentially deadly secret. In her new faction, Tris realises how divided society is. At the initiation, Beatrice makes a surprising choice – to follow her true nature and transfer to Dauntless, becoming Tris. In this society, there is no such thing as free will.īeatrice Prior is born into the Abnegation faction, but when she turns sixteen, she must choose the faction to which she will devote her life. Each faction believes their characteristic to be the most important value: Candor value honesty above all things, Abnegation selflessness, Dauntless courage, Amity peace and Erudite intelligence. Society is divided into five factions where citizens live with other like-minded comrades. As the novel ends, Tris helps Tobias overcome some of his fears and anxieties, and in return, Tobias declares his love for Tris.In post-apocalyptic Chicago, humanity is ruled on one principle: all citizens are defined by their dominant characteristic which they must live and act according to. In spite of his bravery, Tobias suffers from deep psychological trauma: his father, Marcus, beat him with a belt when he was a child. Like Tris, Tobias is secretly Divergent, and also has an unusually small number of fears, meaning that he’s an especially bold and courageous soldier. Tobias imparts this lesson to Tris, with whom he has a romance that's still going on by the end of the book. Unlike his rival, Eric, Tobias believes that being strong and brave-in other words, being Dauntless-means being selfless, sacrificing one’s own safety to protect that of other people. This points to something that sets Tobias apart from most of his Dauntless peers: he’s genuinely concerned with helping other people. Although Tobias used to be a highly promising warrior and strategist for the Dauntless, he chose to devote his life to training new Dauntless recruits instead of settling into a powerful government position, as most people of his abilities would do.

Tobias is one of the most mysterious characters in the book.
